A dragon finial forms a loop from which to hang this antique iron lantern shaped like a bell with grated window and door, the bottom plate pierced with images of a pagoda and Daimonji-mountain of Kyoto. When hung the imagery cut into the base would have been cast out on the ground below the lantern. It came from a home along the ancient pleasure quarters of Kamishichiken in Kyoto. It comes complete with chain and hook for hanging. There is an ancient break on one side (or it was cast that way to create a sense of imperfection, adding to its wabi-sabi appeal. The lantern is 10 x 10 inches (25 x 25 cm) and is in overall fine condition.
