Exquisite Japanese Chawan Tea Bowl by Hisaoka Fuyuihiko

The engraved inner surface of this Eisei (Shadowed Blue) chawan is stunning! It is by Hisaoka Fuyuhiko (b. 1944) and comes enclosed in the original signed and stamped kiri-wood box. The five-petaled rim is very thin, creating a sense of luxury when brought to the lips. Inside is engraved a startlingly beautiful rendition of a lotus flower among various other foliage; the design based on Korean motif but with a Japanese sense of grace. The deep blue-green has filled the cuts, leaving the area surrounding drained of color. Outside the blue fades over smooth clay to soft white at the base. The bowl is 6-1/4 inches (16 cm) in diameter, 2-1/2 inches (6.5 cm) tall and in perfect condition. Fuyuhiko, originally from Amagasaki City outside Kobe, was inspired to the plastic arts by the work of Ishiguro Munemaru, and, after two years working at the Akahada Kamamoto in Nara, apprenticed under living National Treasure Shimizu Uichi in 1970. He has been accepted at the National Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition, and National Ceramic Art Exhibition, and has a tremendous list of private exhibitions Nationwide. This bowl dates to the mid 1980s.
