Spectacular Glass Vase by Iwata Hisatoshi w/Box

An unusual black glass vase by one of Japans leading 20th century glassiers Iwata Hisatoshi (1925-1994) enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Ryumon. Ordinarily much brighter, this piece has a brooding presence. Rivers of blue flow over a molten black shadow, textured iron gray dividing the smooth surface. It is Jet black within, with a black base. The vase is 10-3/4 inches (27 cm) tall, roughly 9 inches (22.5 cm) diameter. Hisatoshi was born the son of famous Meiji period glass artist Iwata Toshichi, and apprenticed under Wada Sanzo at the age of 17. He was first submitted to the Nitten in 1949, returning every year thereafter, eventually being honored as a judge, and in 1955 began his international career with visits to California and Brussels. His list of exhibitions and awards is impressive, and he is part of the permanent collection of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art among many many others.
