Fine Antique Japanese Buddhist Gold/Lacquer Altar Table
Nothing shines like real gold, and this superior maezukue prayer table covered in genuine gold leaf supports that statement. The piece rises on scrolling legs from a base cut through with fretted filigree, the same pattern repeated trellis-like in the diaper between the legs. Atop this are found four windows in front carved with various seasonal flowers, two long framed golden windows in back. The removable top has scrolling flutes on the corners, with maki-e designs of a drum, lotus and instruments usually associated with angels. It comes enclosed in a custom wooden box and dates from the Meiji period. The table is 26 x 5 x 7 inches (66 x 13 x 18 cm) to the top of the table edge scrolls. There are a few minor losses to the gold foil (see photos) and a dent in the back of the table under the top (not visible from the front).
