Antique Japanese Root-wood Ikebana Vase

The knurled surface of this two level natural wood vase emanates a soft red glow, folds and valleys accented with ages dark color. The outer shape is entirely natural but for one edge carved off the upper portion which is supported by the two arms growing vine-like up and highly polished. A natural pocket in the wood allows for the lower bamboo insert, visible from the side through a dark cave-like opening. The vase is 13 inches (32.5 cm) tall and in overall fine good condition, with only some insect damage to the bamboo inserts as visible in the photos. It likely dates from the later 19th or early 20th century
