Antique Japanese Tea Ceremony Bronze Futa-oki, Monkey

A rare bronze ring in the shape of a monkey for use in the Japanese tea ceremony wrapped in a custom made silk Shifuku pouch enclosed in a period kiri-wood box. The creature is well defined, body covered in a combed mass of hair, his ears and face left smooth. He arches back in a pose, arms and legs wrapped around the lid implied; an insidious cry echoing from his open mouth. The piece is likely 19th century, and measures roughly 2-1/2 inches (6 cm) diameter, 2 inches (5 cm) tall. The box is simply titled Old Bronze Monkey Futa-Oki. The piece likely dates to the 19th century possibly slightly earlier.
