Fine Japanese Raku-yaki Pottery Gourd w/ Gold Maki-e

Soft grey, green and yellow tinge the burnt red surface of this gourd shaped vase by Raku artist Ogawa Choraku (1912-1991) with an inscription in gold lacquer by Maki-e artist Kinsai enclosed in the original wooden box signed by both artists. Written across one side in gold is Toki no En (the length of time) Omote followed by a character we have not been able to decipher and Ryu Gin (The cry of a dragon), the poem followed by the character Tama (as in the Buddhist jewel). By the arrangement one might see the placement of characters as the dragon coming down from the clouds to reach for the illusive jewel. The vase is 9 inches (23 cm) tall, roughly 7 inches (18 cm) diameter and comes wrapped in a patterned hemp bag. Choraku was born the first son of the Choraku family in Kyoto. Upon graduating the Kyoto Industrial Institute (Ceramics department) he was forced at the very young age of 17 to take over the family business do the early passing of his father. His work is highly valued in the Japanese Tea World, and has long set a standard for craftsmanship preferred by the Iemoto.
