Japanese Kogo, Bee-hive by Akamatsu Hakusai

A porcelain kogo incense box in the shape of two wasps on a comb by Akamatsu Hakusai enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Sheer white porcelain covers the intricately formed creatures as they tend to their work. The legs are so thin it is amazing they withstood the heat. The kogo is roughly 3 inches (8 cm) long and in perfect condition. Hakusai learned the art of Hirado under a long tutelage with Sakaida Kakiemon XII before returning to his home district in Harima, Hyogo prefecture, to open his own kiln in 1940. He created beautiful Hakuji and Sometsuke porcelains based on the tradition of Arita and Hirado, as well as these sculptural pieces.
