Edo period Korin Maki-e Lacquer Box

A fine Edo era lacquer box of raw wood decorated with maki-e and inlayed with lead and mother of pearl in the Korin style of the 18th century. The scene is the 8 bridges of the classic love tale Ise Monogatari. While journeying the subject of the tale comes across a river dividing into 8 channels, each crossed by a bridge and clustered with Iris. This box is deftly designed with the crisp fresh petals of the flowers contrasting starkly with the dark worn lead, the image enhanced by the use of the raw worn wood as a backdrop. It is roughly 4-1/2 by 5-1/2 by 2-1/2 inches (14 x 11 x 6.5 cm) and is in fine condition, with some wear as might be expected on the base. It is enclosed in an antique kiri-wood box titled Okashiki (Sweets container), annotated inside Ogata Korin Yatsuhashi no Maki-e.
