Japanese Scroll Painting Early Work by Domoto Insho

A happy sage seated in a thatched hut looks at us with a compassionate smile as if to say Why the Rush? on this scroll by Domoto Insho enclosed in the original signed wooden box. He is surrounded in rich orange foliage with vibrant dashes of blue. Below a pink gate leads to a path bringing the eyes n a journey to meet the mystical hermitAat once vivacious and calming. Color on silk in a patterned gray border extended with beige and ending with ivory rollers. The scroll measures 15-1/2 by 79 inches (39 x 201 cm) and is in fine condition. Dating circa 1920. Even in this early work we see the genius which propelled this artist to international fame.
