Taisho p. Japanese Exhibition Size Scroll by Raiseki
A massive painting of two oriental beauties standing in the shade of a broad leafed tree by Tamaoki Raiseki. Exquisite detailing in the patterns of the draping robes fitting the demure faces. Pale white gofun accentuates their noble features. It expresses the fascination with which the Japanese held imagery of the continent. The pigment on silk scene is enclosed in a patterned silk border, stylistically both the painting and border that of the Late Taisho period. This is huge at 51-1/2 x 105-1/2 inches (131 x 268 cm), certainly not done for the average Japanese house, made for the halls of the National Galleries where exhibitions were popular before the war years. Light scattered foxing and handling marks are present but not detracting. Tamaoki Raiseki (1899-1978) was an artist in Gifu, outside the main city of Nagoya, studied under Ohashi Suiseki and was most well remembered for animal imagery.
