| A fantastic Mid Edo (18th c.) Hosokawa Clan Armor Designated Important Cultural Property by the Japanese Armor Society (Juyo Bunka Shiryo); officialy titled Murasaki Kebiki Odoshi Kondo Ryu Uchidashi Gakuchi Ni-Mai-Do Gusoku (Tight Lavender Laced Armor of Two Parts with Gold Plated Brass Hand Formed Dragon Displayed in Framed Panel). The Hosokawa crest dominates every aspect of the armor, Kabuto, Sode, Kote, Do and Haidate. It is enclosed in red lacquered wooden boxes with black leather covers also bearingthe family crest. The armor consists of a 62 plate black lacquered Kabuto with five lame Kiritsuke Kozane Shikoro featuring prominent fukigaeshi bearing the family crest in Shakudo. The pins securing the mabizashi and Shikoro are also in the shape of the crest, and the Hachimanza is made of brass and Shakudo. On the Mabiashi the crest is written four times with pale red lacquer. It retains the original Edo period Devils head Maedate. The mask is a me-no-shita Ho of Nerikawa lacquered black with a nodokake of Kiritsuke Kozane Scales. The Sode are also Kiritsuke Kozane with silver and brass fittins, the crest in Shakudo. THe Do is a combination of Hon Iyozane and Kiritsuke scales with upper section wrapped in brown leather decorated with the family crest, and features silver and shakudo fittings. In center is a hammer formed (uchidashi) dragon in gold gilded brass set on a leather field. A belt of Kiritsuke Kozane Kusazuri are suspended from byakudan gilded leather at the waist. The Sangu are all of very high quality on matching silk with the family crest on the sleeves and Haidate. For larger and more extensive photos please inquire.
