WAYNE THIEBAUD Rare Signed Silkscreen "Bird" c. 1950-55
WAYNE THIEBAUD (American, b.1920): A gorgeous, large original signed silkscreen by the renowned American pop artist; circa 1950-55. This early work represents Thiebaud in a transitional mode, with a nod to his earliest days as a cartoonist, as well as testament to his absorption of Abstract Expressionism (he was friends with Willem De Kooning and Franz Kline during a stay in New York), made obvious by the artist's gestural "flinging" of paint. Thiebaud's early works are highly sought after. Recently, a small "expressionist" oil on canvas by Thiebaud dated 1961 sold at auction for $240,000 (Bonhams & Butterfields, Lot 1059, Nov 18, 2008). Measures 21 1/8 x 31 1/8 inches; Sheet: 25 1/4 x 36 1/2 inches. Professionally matted and framed. Medium: unique silkscreen on wove paper. Signed in pencil lower right: "Thiebaud." Provenance: Los Angeles estate. Please disregard glare in photos above and below. Condition: Good condition. Detailed report as follows: with light and mat staining, vertical band of faint discoloration near tail feathers, 1/4" x 1/4" paper loss at center edge of top margin, faint handling creases. Frame with one small nick. This silkscreen was being sold at a few years ago at the New York Armory Print Fair for over $18,000.00
