MANUEL FELGUEREZ Large Mexican Modernist Metal CAROUSEL
MANUEL FELGUEREZ (Mexican, b. 1928) This is a spectacularly massive vintage carousel by noted Mexican artist, Manuel Felguerez; recently recovered from a Southern California estate. Works of this stature retail for upwards of $5,000. This work - an original by Felguerez and not a later reproduction - is being offered today for far below what you would find in any gallery. Please read below for details. Work measures approximately: 25 x 14 inches. Subject: a carousel ride with four children on horses. Medium: steel, papier-mache, paint and wood (base). Estimated age: 1960-1969. Signature at base (on metal name plaque). Condition: very good condition, some mild age-associated wear: a few mild cracks to paint/papier-mache and a few areas of papier-mache loss on child's dress (please see photos posted above and below). Carousel turns just fine. Manuel Felguerez is known to produce works in several mediums including large exterior metal sculptures, paintings and murals. Felguérez was born in the city of Zacatecas in 1928. He has a multi-faceted education; from taxidermy to anthropology. He studied at "La Esmeralda" School -Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado-Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes. He studied at the Academy of the Grande Chaumier in Paris and was a student of Ossip Zadkine (1949-1950). In 1967 he was an invited professor at Cornell University and in 1975 he was a guest researcher at Harvard University. His large-scale sculptures can be found in front of the Tribunal of Justice in Mexico City and the University of Colima in Mexico. His works are collected throughout the world.
