| This is a gorgeous gem of a painting by esteemed American artist Walter Granville-Smith (1870-1938); recently recovered from an Alhambra, CA estate. Walter Granville-Smith began his career as an illustrator. He had a keen interest in color, even early on, and produced the first color illustration in the United States (Godey's Magazine). At the end of the 19th century, Granville-Smith toured Europe and when he returned he focused on the genre, taking inspiration from his eloped vacation spot and eventual residence on the South Shore of Long Island. He was an esteemed member of the National Academy of Design and even served as President of the Salmagundi Club (1924-1926). His works may be found among in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian, Butler Institute of Art, Toledo Museum, Philadelphia Art Club, etc. Work measures 9 x 11 inches (image size). Overall board measures: 10 3/4 x 13 inches. Subject: landscape. Signed and dated lower left, 1922. Medium: watercolor on paper board. Condition: In very good condition, board with some wear at edges (not affecting image).
