| This is an original painting by noted Alabama-born self-taught artist, Mose Tolliver (1920-2006); recently recovered from the estate of a Los Angeles folk art collector. Tolliver is, perhaps, one of the most respected folk artists to have emerged from the American South in the 20th century. After a massive injury that saw Tolliver's legs crushed and useless, Tolliver took up painting. After many years of painting and becoming a local favorite in Montgomery, Alabama, Mose T. caught the attention of the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, where an exhibit of the artist's work was held in 1981. Later, his work was featured in the landmark exhibition of Black American Folk Art in Washington D.C.'s Corcoran Gallery. He would have subsequent exhibits at the Smithsonian American Museum of Art, and the Philadelphia College of Art. Work measures 16 3/4 x 24 1/2 inches. Medium: paint on wood board. Soda can pull tab on top. Signed lower right. Subject: three figures (two men and a woman). Included is a photo of "Mose T" with his finished work. Condition: very good original condition. Please view my other listing for more Mose Tolliver folk art paintings from the same great estate! Shipping is FREE within the USA. California residents please add 9% sales tax. | ||
