|This traditional Chinese wedding basket, made of light-weight wood, has 25 different black and gold vignettes of Qing Dynasty life painted on its octagonal trays and lid. The tall black bent willow handle is wrapped in bamboo strips woven into a black-accented pattern. The base of the basket and the scene on the lid are framed with key patterns, another element typical of the profuse symbolic adornment often found on late Qing items, especially those associated with marriage. Two of the three trays can be lifted out, and the third is affixed to the base. This basket, with its black and gold designs displayed on an unusual cinnamon-toned background, is a nice reminder of a China now nearly gone. The piece is in very good condition. A few of the painted scenes are worn but remain recognizable, and the interiors of the trays appear to have been reconditioned. We have seen Chinese wedding baskets repurposed as interesting entry hall accents, as side tables and simply as cultural icons to light up a dull space. Dimensions: height including willow handle 24 ¾” (63 cm), add 2” (5 cm) if the metal handle is upright; height from base to lid 20 ¼” (51.5 cm); diameter 18” (45.8 cm).
