An exceptionally beautiful face distinguishes this mid-20th century reclining Mandalay Buddha. Carved from one piece of dense Burmese teak, the sleek dark reddish brown figure depicts the Buddha passing into Nirvana. On the wrist is a bracelet with the magic wish-fulfilling jewel Cintamani(see photo enlargement #6). The neck is slender and carved with the three folds characteristic of most Burmese Buddha images. Intricate edging on the graceful draped robe is created of thayo, a lacquer thickened with bone ash that dries to the hardness of wood. This is the last of the reclining Buddha figures we collected in Burma about 20 years ago. The figure is in good condition. Note that the outside fold on the left side of the robe appears to be extended across the bottom of the robe toward the left hand (see photo enlargements #1, 2 and 4). This is not a crack in the wood but could be a flaw in the wood or perhaps caused by a slip of the carver’s knife. Dimensions: length 23 ½ “(60 cm), height 5 ½” (14 cm), depth 4 ½” (11.5 cm).
