Persian Hunting Scene Miniature Painting
This Middle Eastern miniature painting depicts a surreal hunting scene on the banks of a river, where two large green creatures are surfacing. Two men kneeling on the riverbank appear poised to release small arrows toward the huge heads of the fish. Five more men along the river banks are either chasing or hunting small, deer-like animals. Both the central scene and wide border are brightened by the liberal use of gold leaf, a characteristic of Persian works. Strange implements are held by the men in the central scene—in the foreground one carries a long spear or prod, another an odd sword with a brush-like tip (see photo enlargement #6) and a third man holds a shield. A similar sword and prod are carried by the two men on the other side of the river, and a large animal chases the deer in the right foreground. We found this piece in Lebanon in the town of Zahle in the Bekka Valley, near the Syrian border, and were fascinated by its strange scene and strong colors. There was no information on its origin or how it came to Lebanon. It is dated at mid-20th century but could be older. The painting was done on an old manuscript page (see photo enlargement #5) and the entire painted area is in excellent condition. Tape was used on the two upper corners outside the painted area (see photo enlargement #10). Dimensions of painted area: height 12 ¼” (31 cm), width 8 ½” (21.5 cm).
