Early 20th Century Samovar
Bearing a Russian production date seal of 1904, this samovar was found in the Republic of Georgia, once part of the former USSR. Numerous other stamps on the vessel attest to the fame and awards accorded its Russian maker. Georgians, who were under Russian rule for 70 years, followed many Russian practices, among them the customs surrounding tea drinking. After their country became independent, they sold off many of their Russian possessions. The tray and bowl are silver plated; the samovar itself is brass plated with nickle. It was one of a number of interesting acquisitions made by Silk Road Gallery owners as they explored a little-known branch of the old Silk Road that passed through Tbilisi, capital of Georgia. The samovar is in excellent condition. Dimensions: height 20" (51 cm), width 15" (38 cm), depth 13" (33 cm); tray width 13" (33 cm), depth 19" (49 cm).
