|This nine-foot-long Chinese ancestor painting on hemp was commissioned by a grandson in memory of his great grandfather, Wang Wan Yin. It is Taoist in nature. Calligraphy across the top of the painting honors the ancestor as "Official of Heaven." The inscription along one side reads "Respectfully dedicated by an unworthy grandson in memory of his great grandfather Wang Wan Yin." On the opposite side, the date of the painting is shown as a point within the 60 year cycle of the Chinese calendar. Given the style of the painting, most significantly the way the folds of the robes are shown, its date of origin probably is 1836, but could be as early as 1776. The two women shown with the great grandfather likely represented his wife and mother (or the older woman could have represented wife number one and the younger woman wife number two.) Since the large hanging was meant to be displayed in the family ancestral hall, it indicates that Family Wang was prominent in its community. Though the exact area where this painting originated is not certain, it was found in the northern mountains of Shaanxi Province. During the Cultural Revolution, it had been rolled into a container and buried. We purchased it in 1991. The wide green fabric border shows evidence of its time underground with discoloration and frayed areas on the outside edges. The painting itself is in relatively good condition for its age and history. The faces and robes of the three subjects still show excellent detail and color and are not damaged. Gold leaf remains on the hat of the great grandfather and in a few other areas. The background has some water stains and discoloration (see photo enlargements). This huge painting is a quite impressive look back into a mid-Qing household. Dimensions of the full piece including borders: height 115" (292 cm), width 54" (137 cm). Dimensions of painted area: height 96" (244 cm), width 47" (119 cm). SEE MORE ITEMS IN OUR COLLECTION AT WWW.SILKROAD1.COM|
