| This nine-foot-long painting on hemp was commissioned by a grandson in memory of his great grandfather, Wang Wan Yin. It is Taoist in nature. Calligraphy across the top of the painting honors the ancestor as "Official of Heaven." The inscription down the right side reads "Respectfully dedicated by an unworthy grandson in memory of his great grandfather Wang Wan Yin." On the left side, the date of the painting is shown as a symbol that signifies a point within the 60 year cycle of the Chinese calendar. Given the style of the painting, most significantly the way the folds of the robes are shown, its origin probably is 1836, but could be as early as 1776. The two women shown with the grandfather most likely represented his wife and mother. Since the large hanging was meant to be displayed in the family ancestral hall, it indicates that Family Wang was prominent in its community. We found this piece in the small village of Yijun in the northern mountains of Shaanxi Province where we were traveling while on an exchange program at a university in Xian in 1991. The painting survived the Cultural Revolution because it was rolled into a container and buried. It may not have originated where we found it. The story of our actual purchase of the piece is a long one and involves keeping it out of the hands of a European antique dealer but we hope this painting eventually gets back to China or least is displayed in a museum. A green fabric border around the painting shows wear and damage, and will require restoration work. The painting itself is in very good condition for its age and history. The costumes and faces of the three subjects still show excellent detail, and are not affected by a few minor water stains on the hemp. The color is excellent and much crisper than these photos show. Dimensions of the full piece including borders: height 115" (292 cm), width 54" (137 cm). Dimensions of painted area excluding borders: height 96" (244 cm), width 47" (119 cm).
