| Elegantly executed designs in red, yellow and green on a black background decorate this 19th century Burmese lacquer box. Called a "bi-it," this beautifully crafted container held combs, oil, perfume and sandalwood powder. The unusual scene on the lid shows a man and woman walking among trees collecting fruit. Their multi-patterned traditional clothing is drawn in great detail. Graceful flowers, calligraphy with a wish for happiness, and the signature of the maker decorate the sides of the lid and box. Designs were accomplished using a Burmese technique called "yun incising" that involved carefully cutting fine lines through layers of black, red, yellow and green lacquer to create the scenes. The many coats of lacquer were applied to a base of coiled bamboo. A lift-out tray and the interior of this box are red lacquer. The bottom of the box is shaped in three tiers encircled with a series of fine lines. This very attractive box is in excellent condition.
