Seated in lotus position, this early 20th century bronze Burmese Buddha has classic Ava features. The right hand is in bhumisparsa mudra (earth touching, centering), the robe is quite simple, the face triangular with small upturned mouth and the head is topped with an onion-shaped finial--all Ava attributes. Unlike the more ornate double lotus throne seen on many Ava figures, however, this Buddha of later vintage sits on a plain waisted throne. The relatively small size and simplicity of the throne serves to emphasize the pleasing, unassuming attitude of the Buddha. The back of the throne is flattened, giving the piece a slender profile. The manner in which the metal has aged suggests this figure may have been displayed on the outdoor altar of a village dhamma-yon, the local center for Buddhist devotions and festivals. In small communities, dhamma-yon, while protected with a roof, often are open to the elements on all sides. The color of this Buddha, depending on the intensity of light hitting it, appears either bronze or black. Our photo enlargements include shots using different lighting conditions to show the figure both ways. Remains of the clay core used in casting the image can be seen inside the open base. Other than some metal discoloration, the figure is in very good condition. Dimensions: height 8-1/2" (22 cm), width 4-1/2" (11 cm), depth 3" (8 cm).
