Fifteen Ottoman horsemen gallop across the 33-inch length of this hunt scene miniature. The unusual panoramic format of the painting, reminiscent of a hand scroll, was achieved by attaching three old manuscript pages together lengthwise. Done on a background of gold leaf, the scene is colorful and lively, with brightly attired horsemen and horses in a field of flowers and trees. A number of deer leap among them and appear to be outwitting the riders, all of whom carry bows but with no arrows in evidence, so that the effect is one of a happy outing in the mountains. On the reverse side of the painting are three pages of text, which apparently were on the paper prior to the use of the other side for the painting. The gold leaf background on the front side completely covers any text that may have been there. There are ample margins around the painting for framing. This mid-20th century miniature from Turkey is in excellent condition. Dimensions of the painting: height 4" (10 cm), width 33" (84 cm). Dimensions including margins: height 6-1/2" (16 cm), width 38" (97 cm).
