A Balinese interpretation of Romeo and Juliette figures is carved in yellow hibiscus wood. It is from the studio of I. W. Mudano, a second generation master carver who has exhibited internationally for decades. He works primarily with yellow hibiscus wood, producing both original abstract forms and traditional Balinese figures and masks. This carving, he says, depicts the couple from the Balinese folk version of Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliette. A visit to the Mudano studio in Mas, near Ubud, on the Indonesian Island of Bali, reveals the amazing range of beautiful shapes, colors and textures he is able to see and extract from just one type of wood. The wood in this carving is particularly varied in color and grain, with a swath of light tones across the back, and the darker vertical grain in front used to define the shoulders and arms of the two figures. This work was purchased in the Mudano Studio 15 years ago and is in perfect condition. Dimensions: height 8-1/2" (22 cm), width 8" (20 cm), depth 5" (13 cm).
