Rajasthan Miniature Flower Painting
A Rajasthani botanical miniature on handmade paper by Bikaner artist Raju Swami is green and gold with deep gold flowers shading to orange/red. An exotic white butterfly hovers over the meticulously veined flowers. Bikaner, a remote walled desert town in western India, has a miniaturist tradition in both Mughal and Rajasthani styles. This artist, who grinds his own mineral colors and makes his own brushes that sometimes consist of only a few squirrel hairs, produces particularly fine botanicals. The central image in this miniature has six borders, starting with a thin gold line, then a wider green border with gold scrolling foliage, then another thin gold line, next a thin orange/red line, then the main border with gold leaf flecks on brown paper and flowers in four corners, and finally a thin pinkish holding line. The multiple borders give richness and importance to the miniature. The painting is contemporary and was purchased from the artist in his Bikaner studio. It is in perfect condition except for four small pieces of tape that unfortunately were placed on the outside green area but will be covered when the piece is framed. Dimensions excluding the outside green area: height 10-1/4" (26 cm), width 7-1/4" (8-1/2 cm).
