The phoenix, emblem of peace, shimmers in shades of yellow, blue and purple on both sides of this Meiji era silk obi. A background pattern in cream and brown provides a counterpoint to the colorful birds and flowers. This is a "hitoe" obi, which means it is woven and unlined, meant to be worn during the hot Japanese summers. Hitoe obi were made in varying widths and lengths and in either single or double layers. This one, at 12-3/4 feet long and nearly 13 inches wide is exceptionally large for an obi. The textured woven silk has a soft sheen, shown to best advantage in strong light. This early 20th century obi is in excellent condition on both sides of its full length. Dimensions: length 152" (386 cm), width 12-3/4" (32 cm). (SEE MORE ITEMS IN OUR COLLECTION AT WWW.SILKROAD1.COM)
