Small Signed Lacquer Betel Box
A lacquer betel box is signed on the lid with the name of the maker, Bathama U Carek. The etched portrait under the name perhaps was a representation of the artisan. The date 1324 that appears below the sketch is based on the Burmese calendar, and means this piece was made in 1963. The inside is fitted with two trays to accommodate ingredients for assembling a quid of betel. The deep lid kept the betel leaves fresh. Since this small box would hold less than one-quarter of the contents of the larger betel containers made for the use of households and guests, it may be assumed this one was made for personal use and/or travel. Unusual for betel containers of any size, it has four little thayo (thickened lacquer) feet. This piece is in good condition. Dimensions: height 4" (10 cm), diameter 4-1/2" (12 cm).
