|From a nature study series by Lali Lomtadze of the Republic of Georgia, this mixed media on paper takes a realistic look at leaves, their patterns, shapes and role as food for insects. Noticeable in the composition are two leaves with bite-sized pieces missing, presumably the result of a bug's dinner. Apparently the artist painted just what she saw after propping the stems in a container, appropriate for her series theme of nature in a vase. Whimsy is added with random lines scratched around the perimeter that morph into a face partially hidden behind the uppermost leaf. Lali Lomtadze lives in Tbilisi, Georgia's capitol, where she was born in 1955 and graduated from the State Academy of Arts in 1979. Her work has appeared in international solo exhibitions beginning in the mid 1980s in Japan, Sweden, Russia, Poland and the Ukraine. She has had pieces in joint shows in the U.S., Germany, Denmark, Hungary and Azerbaijan. Her signature on this piece is in the Georgian alphabet. Dimensions of the matted and framed work: height 16" (41 cm), width 14-1/2" (37 cm). Dimensions of the paper: height 9-1/2" (24 cm), width 7-1/2" (19 cm).|
