Young Buddhist Novice Watercolor by Khan Bo
A young boy in service as a novice monk sets out on his morning rounds to beg for food in this watercolor that conveys the essence of Burma. It is the practice for boys between the ages of about 7 and 13 years of age to leave their families and live for a time as novices at their local monastery where they receive instruction and live monastic lives. This painting, signed by Khan Bo, captures the boy's sense of duty, picturing him alone in a sun-baked Burmese landscape. We unfortunately are unable to provide a detailed bio of the artist beyond the fact that his work was shown in a country-wide exhibit of contemporary Burmese artists held in Yangon in 1999. Many of the paintings produced by the artists of Burma (Myanmar) are in the category of Buddhist art and therefore are left unsigned; this one, uncharacteristically, has a large signature prominently added. The watercolor is matted, framed and in excellent condition. Dimensions including frame: height 20-3/4" (53 cm), width 16-1/2" (41 cm). Dimensions paper only: height 15" (38 cm), width 10-1/2" (26 cm).
