A mid-19th century Indian miniature painting from Rajasthan depicts Sawai Man Singh, who was Maharajah of Jaipur more than 200 years ago. The strong influence of Mughal style is evident in the exquisite detail of the gold designs on the sword, floral patterns on the shoes, scarf and hem of the robe and in the pose of the subject in profile. Tiny gold designs cover the gold robe, and fine gold lines radiate from a green nimbus. The rich colors are enhanced by a narrow black border with delicate gold scrolling surrounded by a wider border speckled with gold. The formality of the miniature is quite Persian in feel. It is painted on heavy paperboard that has fragments of notes or records on the back, indicating that the board was reclaimed from an earlier use. This miniature is in excellent condition. Dimensions including the outer gold speckled border: height 8” (20cm), width 5 ¼” (13 cm). Dimensions of the image surrounded by the inner border with gold scrolling: height 6 ¼” (15.5 cm), width 3 ¼” (8.4 cm) SEE MORE ITEMS IN OUR COLLECTION AT WWW.SILKROAD1.COM
