Mid-19th Century Skrimshaw Whale Bone Pie Crimper

According to Wikipedia, scrimshaw is "the name given to scrollwork, engravings, and carvings done in bone or ivory. Typically it refers to the handiwork created by whalers made from the byproducts of harvesting marine mammals." After all parts of the animal were harvested, sailors took the remains - teeth, bone, baleen - and made tools and decorative items from the pieces. Some items were actually used on the whaling ship and many were taken home as gifts.

This pie crimper or jagging wheel dates to the middle of the 1800's and is made of whale bone and whale baleen (black spacer).

The crimper is 6 7/8 inches long, 2 inches wide and 1/2 inch thick. It was made with double layers of whale bone. The piece is carved as Neptune's Steed - hippocanthus, the mythological monster that pulled Neptune's carriage.

It is missing the small pointed piece that was inserted into the head. Otherwise, it is in excellent condition and must have been stored away for many years.

Today these items are very collectible and many may be found in museums. I purchased this along with other scrimshaw items at a Maine auction many years ago. I will be adding more of these antique tools to my shop shortly. Shipping is $6.25 and USPS insurance is $10.50
