Berlin jewelry is rare, and fine examples are collected world wide. This appeal includes the subtle beauty as well as the history. The origins can be traced to the Royal Berlin Foundry in 1804 which produced objects. Jewelry production began approximately in 1806. The first jewelry items were long chains with cast links such as this necklace. In 1813 and 1815 the Prussian royal family encouraged the citizens to contribute gold and silver jewelry to fund the war effort against Napoleon...

I have just returned from a buying trip in Paris where I found these wonderful cut steel earrings. Unusual in form and design, they are circa 1800. They have faceted, decorative, steel elements riveted to a steel plate. The steel plate is shaped and well detailed.

They measure a long 3 1/4 inches X slightly less than 1 inch across the bottom...

This unique gunmetal long chain was purchased in Paris. At the turn of the 19th Century, alternative metals gained popularity. Women desired a new, sleek look as they entered the world seeking equality. The suffrage movement and women's eagerness to obtain the vote empowered them. Novelty jewelry with hearts and flowers were left behind and a distinguished look was desirable...

These Victorian earrings are cut steel. Steel jewelry is not to be confused with marcasite, which is iron pyrite. Steel jewelry is actually tiny nails or studs that are faceted and painstakingly set on a metal base plate, attached by rivets. Extremely time consuming, as each stud is set in such a way as to maximize the refection of light...

Incredibly lovely, this French, Napoleon 111, bracelet is circa 1810. It is in gilded metal, still so vibrant, that it looks like 18 karat gold. The design is of a central section embellished with opalescent glass. Within each glass section is a fine decorative flower motif centered with a turquoise colored glass stone. The metal is repousse, which is metal shaped from the back to create decorative forms...

Cut steel earrings in their original form and in excellent condition, are so difficult to find. These are designed with a top cut steel cluster, attached to a faceted steel bale, which connects to a very detailed, beautiful flower. The central flower is surrounded by a circle of cut steel, which not only frames it, but adds an illusion of movement. Each faceted piece of steel is connected to a metal backplate with a rivet. This is very time consuming work done entirely by hand...
