This lorgnette, is silver designed with the process of Niello. This process was used for centuries, but had renewed interest in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. According to the book Victorian Jewelry by Dawes and Davidov, "niello is a process in which a fusion of silver, copper, lead and sulphur is melted and poured on silver."
