This wonderful, very long niello chain was purchased in Paris. I was fortunate to acquire it from a retiring dealer's personal collection. It is so rare to find one that is very long, especially in such pristine condition.
Niello is the fusion of silver, copper, lead and sulfur which when blackened is poured into incised metals.
In this example, the lozenge shaped links have a vine motif set in 800 silver. They are accented with rose gold vermeil connecting links. Each decorative link measures 5/8 inches long x 1/4 inch across. The full length is an amazing 60 inches which can be be doubled or tripled around the neck. It terminates with the original spring ring and dog clip which can be used as shown, or easily adapted for a pendant. The contrast of the colored metals and the geometric form make a refined and elegant statement. France, circa 1890
