This Victorian, silver, Scottish agate serpent pin is circa 1850. Perhaps the rarest figural formal to find in Scottish agate jewelry, this is a fine example. Prince Albert presented Victoria with a snake ring symbolizing eternal love upon their betrothal. The people became fascinated with the symbolism, as well as the beauty of form and lovely pieces of jewelry were created to meet the demand . Queen Victoria's frequently visited her beloved Balmoral Castle wearing Scottish jewelry and dressing her children in tartans. The populace joined her appreciation and the Scottish jewelry industry became quite successful. M en wore the traditional forms and woman figurals, love-knots bracelets and earrings. This particular snake brooch, has a beautiful choice of stones, and the shaped, overlapping agates realistically replicate the undulating body of a snake. Curled and graceful, it remains a symbol of Scottish artistry as well as enduring love. It measures 2 1/4 inches across X 2 3/4 inches down. The back has a maker's mark of MC. It has a replacement clasp, an original T_bar and pin stem, as well as an attached safety chain. There is a small chip in the bloodstone, under the silver right eye that I actually had never noticed until taking these photos. Rare and timeless, Scotland circa 1850. |
