This is an impressive antique niello chain, circa 1890. Niello, is the term used to describe the fusion of silver, copper, lead and sulphur poured into designs that were incised in silver. (See Ginny Dawes, Victorian Jewelry p.48). The metal of choice was silver, and it was usually a lower grade 800, which withstood the firing process. The result was a unique effect, quite refined and especially beautiful when accented with rose gold.
This chain, like most found from this period, was originally a watch chain. It has the original large niello spring ring and the niello dog clip used to attach a watch or fob. These "findings" now add to the fashion statement. Today, woman enjoy them as unique necklaces often paring two or three at at a time. This example, is especially desirable because of its width and fabulous design. Each niello link is twisted and beveled and contrasts with the rose gold vermeil links. It is beautiful worn alone or joined with a locket, or fob..
It measures 18 1/4 inches long X 3/8 wide. The condition is excellent. England or France, circa 1890.
