This is an exceptionally fine example of a long niello chain. Niello is the art of fusing silver, copper, lead and sulphur which is melted and pour on to incised silver, creating patterns. In these links, the pattern is subtle striping. It is in superb condition, with a beautiful design of alternating geometric links of niello, with those of rose gold vermeil. Some of the links combine the niello with the rose gold and the total effect of the design is striking. It terminates with a niello dog clip as well as a niello spring ring. This enables the it to be used both as a chain without a pendant, or attached as seen in the photos to connect a pendant of choice. The chain measures 59 1/2 inches long X 1/8 wide, and can be doubled or tripled around the neck.
It is remarkable finding a 19th century niello chain in this condition. The design has a contemporary appeal with the charm of the 19th century. Wonderful! Circa 1890, England
