This is a fine example of a 19th century Scottish agate brooch. It is in the form of a dirk, and artistically designed as a brooch used to secure the kilts. They are now worn by woman and used as an accent on coats, blazers, and sweaters.

The popularity of Scottish jewelry reached a peak when Queen Victoria wore the jewelry, and made frequent visits to her beloved Balmoral Castle. This particular dirk has well chosen agates with colors that meld, one to the other. They were beautifully shaped by a highly skilled lapidary, and placed in sterling mounts. The hand engraving is superior as is the silver work.. The condition is excellent and it is completely original . It measures a bold 4 3/8 inches long X 1/2 inch across.

Classical Scottish artistry, circa 1860
