Antique Gold Hessionite Garnet Earrings Circa 1800
$1950

These are an extremely fine garnet and natural pearl pair of earrings. They are circa 1800, and were quite popular in Europe, in countries such as France,Germany and Italy. The form , called poissarde ,or fishwife. "So called because they were worn by fishwives selling their wares in Les Halles in Paris in 1795." (reference, Collings/ Dawes, Georgian Jewellery p. 32.)

This pair has the exquisitely fine detail of natural pearls wired around beautiful hessionite garnets. Hessionite garnets are a rich cinnamon/gold color as distinguished from the more commonly used red. Each garnet is set in a fine millegrain collet.

The earrings are designed with a back to front closure, and have the characteristic and beautiful" S " design in the center of the hoop. This design is beautiful from every angle on the ear. They measure 1 inch round and have a an early gold guarantee stamp on the hoop. They are 18k and in excellent condition.

Fine,rare and understated, circa 1800.
