These silver and 18 karat gold earrings are Italian, circa 1880 and are designed with authentic ancient coins. They have fine silver detailing incorporating fine twisted silver wire as a bezel for the coin, as well as an accent in the central element. It is a three section earring with the bottom element freely articulating. Notice too, that the backs are as beautifully finished as he front.
The use of ancient coins in jewelry is familiar to us when the firm of Bulgari, which opened in Rome in the year 1884, gained fame utilizing these coins as adornment. Nicola Bulgari states "We offer an ancient coin, or relic of the past, the prospect of a second life; instead of leaving it in closed in a drawer, we transform it into a living thing."
The use of ancient coin jewelry was quite popular in the 19th century and this particular pair is a fine example. While not made by Bulgari, it has all the earmarks of a fine pair of earrings. The scale and proportion, as well as the fine
details distinguish these from other Victorian silver earrings.
They measure a graceful 2 inches long X 3/4 inches wide. They are in Continental silver, 800, and the ear wires, which are original, are rendered in 18 karat gold. They retain a beautiful patina that only time can create, and are in excellent condition.
