This fine French enamel necklace is rare and truly a work of art. It is designed as double sided enamel pendant and is circa 1820. Inscribed "Gage D'Amitie" or a pledge of friendship, loyalty and love, it is a form of folk art, The pendant would have been a special commission made by an aristocrat who could afford the finest jewelers and artisans. It must have been become the finest sentimental gift presented to a loved one.
The design epitomizes the symbolism of loyalty, a dog idyllically seated with its owner in a garden. The reverse has a cartouche of birds delivering fruit to a picnic basket, completing the theme of a garden setting. The enamel detail is superb, as is the choice of color. The gold work, balance and composition elevates this to the highest standard for those that appreciate fine jewelry.
The pendant is joined by several chains, correct for the period, but most likely added at some point in time. Each of the chains are individually beautiful and add to the charm of this piece. One chain has blue and white enamel stripes complementing the design of the pendant. The gold is 18 carat and the patina is original and rich. The enamel on the pendant is in superb condition with very, very minor surface scratches seen only with magnification. The clasp has some blue enamel loss, as seen in the close-up photo.
The central pendant measures 3 inches long X 1 1/8 inches across the bottom. The necklace measures 24 inches long.
For the advanced collector, or person who values unique beauty. France, circa 1820.
