This antique French gold compass is circa 1890. It is in the form of a ship's wheel and is fully operational. For complete accuracy it could be magnetized. It is completely original and beautifully finished, with lovely engraving on the reverse. It retains the original beveled glass and has gold rope edge details
It makes a symbolic, unique gift to the graduate, or anyone having a change of location, as it will "always help guide them back to their home." I have personally given an antique compass as a gift and I believe it will never be forgotten.
This compass is French, purchased in Paris and retains a poincon, or gold guarantee stamp for 18 karat gold, on the attached "O" ring.
It measures slightly less than 7/8ths round without the additional top ring. It is charming from the front , as well as the back. Join it to a charm bracelet, or wear it on a chain. I wear one with a long chain that has a heart, and I added the compass to another link. This symbolically becomes....."follow your heart."
Either way it is worn, it is unique. Condition is excellent . The front has a tiny, tiny mark under the 1 O'clock position of the wheel. It actually may be a faint French poincon.
