This unique gold fob seal necklace was purchased in London. It is designed with two Georgian period fobs suspended from a gold Victorian chain. The seals are circa 1830 and are finely modeled as stylized pineapples framed by acanthus leaves, symbolizing endurance. The multi colored gold is entirely hand rendered with hand engraving and applied flowers on the base. What is unusual is finding two matching fobs that have survived almost 200 years together. Each has an intaglio on the reverse in polished hard stone. One is a polished carnelian inscribes "Repondez Vite" or respond quickly, and has a bird with a letter in its beak. Romantic vision takes us to a proposal.... We shall never know the actual truth, which is part of the charm. The other seal has a polished chalcedony with an inscribed word or name.
The seals which measure 1 1/2 inches each are suspended from a handmade, Victorian 14 karat gold chain terminating with a dog clip. The seals and chain are a work of art and each retains an original, rich patina. It measures 36 1/2 inches and with the dog clasp weighs 24.9 dwt.
The seals are 18 karat gold and are 8.4 dwt.
Each part has been combined to create a distinctive, one of a kind necklace. I usually sell the fobs and chain separately, but this union was perfection and I am presenting it as it was purchased.
This is timeless and is as charming with a tee shirt and jeans as it is with a special black dress.
