This early 19th century, antique French, 18 karat gold watch fob is a work of art. French jewelry is world renowned for its fine finishing and design. In this example , a fine piece of jewelry, a watch fob, was designed, circa 1830 in multi -colored gold with a central cushion shape, large citrine. The citrine has a beautiful, rich color reflecting light from every angle.
The design is ingenious as the fob swivels to unlock, and then becomes a watch key. The gold work is extraordinary, as it completely hand rendered by a master craftsman.A cornucopia of flowers and grapes surround the citrine and is hand engraved and chased. It is quite rare to find a fob of this quality and bold size, but finding one with the additional decorative elements was a joy. The additional slide was fitted to a ribbon so that this can be worn slipped over the neck. The third element is on the back of the ribbon which adds to its grandeur.
The fob can be worn open with the watch key mechanism displayed or swiveled and locked as shown in the pictures. The fob/key measures a bold 3 3/4 inches long X 2 inches across. The condition is superb and the patina rich and original. There are French guarantee stamps for gold.
This is certainly one of a kind and could only be afforded by someone in the aristocracy.
France in all its grandeur....
