This antique Scottish agate, sterling silver bracelet is a rare work of art. Scottish jewelry has a unique beauty with world wide collectors. It became extremely popular when Queen Victoria visited her beloved Balmoral Castle, dressed her children in tartans and adorned herself in Scottish jewelry. Most Scottish jewelry has traditional forms worn by the men, but bracelets and some sentimental brooches were designed specifically for the women.

This particular bracelet reflects many days of labor and requires the skill of a master lapidary. Each agate is cut and placed next to another like a fine checkerboard puzzle and then set on slate. The alternate sections are curved with the center agate curved and fitted to the others. The colors are subtle and beautiful with all agates indigenous to Scotland. The bracelet terminates with a padlock, finely hand engraved with four agates fitted to the center. The reverse has a locket with hair beneath a glass, a sentimental token of love preserved through time.

It measures 7 1/2 inches long X 7/8ths inches wide. The bracelet is in excellent condition and is completely original. Unique in its choice of agates and in its fine rendering.

Scotland, circa 1860.
