Antique Scottish jewelry abounds in traditional, ceremonial forms which have been used for centuries. Worn on the tartans, the jewelry is strikingly beautiful and unique in design. This brooch is considered a figural, one that was designed for the women, not for the traditional tartans worn by the men. Therefore, there were fewer made and finding one is always a pleasure. This brooch, designed as a bow, is circa 1880 and has beautiful agates all inlaid in silver. The design is ingenious creating the illusion of a ribbon. All agates are original, and beautifully matched for color. The reverse has all original mounts and pinstem as well. It measures 2 3/8 inches across x 1 1/2 inches down. This motif is quite rare, and I have only had a similar design once before. The condition is excellent. |
