| This is a 19th century shakudo bracelet. Shakudo, the term used to describe the metal alloy of copper and gold which forms the base of this art form. This metal work is centuries old and was used by highly skilled artisans who decorated the Japanese swords. When the Samurai era ended in the late 19th century these men were now unemployed and made jewelry to support themselves. The jewelry attracted the foreign markets as well. Here we have a bracelet, originally designed as a bracelet. Most bracelets were formed from pieces of the dismantled swords, but here is one that is original. It has the mixed metals of gold, silver and copper on raised forms crating a naturalistic theme. There are seven six sided plaques and one oval which is the clasp. The silver crimped surround of the clasp is in contrast to the smooth surface of the other seven. It is for a small wrist, measuring, 6 5/8 long x 1 inch wide. The patina is original and in excellent condition never having been polished. The loops at the bottom are for a safety chain which I detached for ease of photography. These are quite rare to find, especially in fine condition. it is understated and beautiful bearing an interesting, significant history. | |||||||||||||
