Beautiful Large Antique Scottish Agate Pin

This antique Scottish agate silver brooch is circa 1880. It is called a Tara brooch, a very traditional form of Scottish jewelry. Queen Victoria's love of Scotland and her frequent trips to Balmoral Castle created a resurgence of interest in this Celtic jewelry. What the Queen wears,so does the populace.

This particular brooch is exceptional not in its colors and detailed hand engraving. The use of jasper, moss and salmon colored agates is soft and beautiful. The amethyst and foiled back citrines complement the colors of the agates. The use of foil beneath the stones was to enhance the light to the closed back mounts. The faceted, bezel set stones are mellow in color and the foiling adds just a glint of light. The foiling has discolored naturally in sections, and thus creates various hues to the stones. It is quite a dramatic size, measuring 2 3/4 inches down x 2 /14 inches across. The reverse has all original mounts and pinstem. There is one tiny crease in the back at the edge of the brooch which needs to be mentioned for accuracy. It is not seen from the front and does not affect the beauty or function. It is in excellent condition and all original. It would be incredible on a paisley shawl, coat or sweater. This is a beauty, circa 1880.
