This is the second listing of a Victorian niello pendant. Niello jewelry became very popular at the turn of the 19th century and lovely items were created to match the demand. The process of niello is unique, whereby metal, in this case silver, is etched in patterns. Then alloys of metals which have been fused are filled in the cavities. The characteristic patterns in muted gray are thus created. This item is circa 1890, and most likely part of a chatelaine. It has two parts, one a sliding mirror case and the second a button hook. Both have European touchmarks that are most likely Russian. The checkerboard pattern is sleek and beautiful, and the condition of both excellent. The beveled mirror has wear, but is completely original with no chips. It slides to open. The button hook has some resistance when opening, but the niello is in perfect condition. The mirror measures 2 inches long(with the bale) x 1 1/4 inches wide. The button hook is 1 1/2 inches long x 3/8 wide. This would make a beautiful, distinctive pendant on a cord or chain. |
